1. Some people feel that we must make every effort to protect the environment for future generations. They say that without immediate action, irreversible damage will be done. Others, however, contend that scientific developments will be able to address any serious problems that may arise in the future. Therefore, it is best not to be concerned.

2. Many people feel that standardized testing in school is absolutely essential. It allows teachers to accurately measure when students have learned required skills and concepts. What they fail to realize, however, is that children learn differently. Therefore, diverse testing methods that cater to each child's individual strengths should be developed to more accurately measure authentic learning.

3. Numerous studies have proven that teachers favor boys in the classroom. Many say that this is grounds to discipline the educator and/or require them to undergo additional training. However, what they do not realize is that these biases are often unconscious. Therefore, it is not right to punish someone for an action or behavior of which they themselves were unaware.

4. Many people believe that the increased number of corporations supporting charitable causes is a positive development. They say it shows that big companies genuinely care about their customers and their communities. What they fail to see, however, is that this is little more than a marketing gimmick. When corporations decide to support good causes, it is usually done only to develop a favorable image that will allow them to earn more profits.

1. "According to an annual employee survey, most women still do not make as much as their male counterparts. This is especially true in traditionally male-dominated careers such as business. It is widely known that women are less assertive than men in social situations. Therefore, this disparity is likely a reflection of the unwillingness of most women to demand a raise rather than the result of widespread sexism in the corporate world."How well reasoned do you find this argument? 2. "Compared to previous generations, today's youth have it quite easy. While years ago many children went out to work at a very young age, today's children remain in school for much longer. Young people today are often in their early thirties before they are required to take on adult responsibilities like marriage, work, and family."

3. "Many studies have shown that nicotine replacement therapy can be an effective tool for those who wish to quit smoking. Up to 40% of individuals who used these products were able to quit, which is likely substantially higher than those who did not use any products. In addition, over half of respondents to these studies indicated that they were still smoke-free at the end of one month. Therefore, using these products for the recommended two- to three-month period is an effective way to kick the habit."
